Artist's Statement

After years of painting only large abstract oils, the work developed into several new series: surreal landscapes, sculptures, representational compositions, self-portraits, and photography.  

 

This imagery is personal and expresses inner thoughts and emotions.

 

As these series developed artistically, basic elements of organic form and the passionate use of color make these works distinctive. The term unconventional may be applied to describe the media and technique(s) used to create these works.  In addition to traditional tools (i.e.) paintbrush and pallet knife, many pieces in this series have been directly executed using my hands. I also made paint by grinding rose petals and other natural materials, added to cow’s blood and/or encaustics. These media contribute to the symbolic quality of the imagery.

 

As a feminist the use of blood is a primal element. 

 

The sculptures are monuments and though they are abstract they are also conceptual w/ a figurative feel. The sculptures evolved from a series of drawings and paintings. 

 

The Tombstones began from a series of paintings titled: Candelabras. The Tombstones paintings were the catalyst of the Entities paintings and they are both evolving.

 

The Conversation paintings have to do w/ the interactions of color and their dynamic characteristics, or their interplay. The interaction or 'conversation between' the colors, is what interests me.

 

The Box paintings are earlier works w/ the same interest in the interaction of complementary colors, in a clean controlled manor. As these paintings have evolved the Boxes/squares became literal delineations. However, the paintings become less personal and the meanings are somewhat lost in translation. So, I began working on paper w/ the Boxes. Paper seems to be the best medium for what is being expressed and in keeping them intimate.

 

I am continuing to explore, create and evolve each series to their logical limit; As well as build on their interaction with each other.  The culminations of these series seem to incorporate the same vision from very different approaches.
